Day 43
The size of body parts isn't really cementing at this point. Trying to pinpoint where each point joins together.

This was a deviation from Loomis. It was from a youtube tutorial, but unfortunately I forget which one...

Vaguely human shaped... I'm not convinced that I'm imrpoving but I must keep going. I feel like I'm just copying Loomis at this point...
Labels: challenge_3
Ok Loomis... Today we'll do it your way. By the way, this pen is actually a very soothing orange. I don't know why the scanner is picking it up as red. Last scan is more head exercises from how to draw the head from any angle, but I traced around the lid of a small jar to create my base to try to look at whether I am drawing accurate enough circles and whether that is half of my problem... My heads suddenly look better XD
Labels: challenge_3
Felt tip pen is nicer to draw with than ball point! XD
Still following the advice that I use pen, get rid of the eraser temptation and work on my bases.
Labels: challenge_3
Exercises in pen - I was advised to work in pen as it encourages me to be more accurate and not rely on the eraser. These were done without reference, relying on what I have learnt this month.

I see improvements. I also see that my features still need work and my head is not quite tilted up as much as I wanted. Again, from a photo reference, and I wanted to show the half way point of this sketch - or rather, I wanted to scan it before I made too many more mistakes :D

I can't decide if she looks like a wraith or half way decent... I probably needed to spend a little longer on her. I think it is time to do some more tutorials!! Compare to Day 5.
Labels: challenge_3
Repetition is making me start to notice things about the brow line and jaw. Trying bigger face bases today, about twice the size as yesterday. Still working on it :3
Labels: challenge_3
I found another head tutorial today and it really helped to gel together what the first tutorial was tryig to show. This one is by Ron Lemon and you can find it here. Also, these were done with my graphite pencil, not my mechanical pencil. I don't know if that helped... It is a solid graphite pencil I found left over from art (10+ years ago...) not a standard led pencil.

After seeing the scan of this I must remind myself again not to get too caught up in outlining. I roughly shaded where the facial hair goes as well and it looked a little better after that, but practice still needed of course.
Labels: challenge_3
Grabbed a few source photos of old men c/o the internet. I'm hoping their gnarly noses will help me get the forms right, the problem now seems to be facial hair. I'm not ready to tackle hair yet.
Labels: challenge_3
The nose is a major weakness at the moment. Here are some nose exercises. Seems I don't do half bad when I have another artists shading to look at as a guide. I also examined some head drawing notes from the convept art forums and got a better result on my head base exercise.

Third day of doing the head from any angle exercise, starting with a base and trying to add features. This exercise takes about 45 minutes. Today I actually erased my first go because it was too terrible and started my circles base again.
Labels: challenge_3
Oh dear... the base looked a lot better before I tried to add features, but here it is even after I tried to do the eyes 3 times. Not sure if I'll do more base practice or start on one of the featured tutorials... I need all sorts of practice.
Labels: challenge_3
Back to basics today. I stumbled upon a great set of drawing tutorials. These are from the how to draw the head from any angle tutorial, but check out the others too.
Labels: challenge_3
A little better I think, but still needs a lot of practice of course. I enjoyed blocking out the hair on this one.
Labels: challenge_3
What am I doing... previously learnt skills out the window. I get the impression that I feel like this at the start of every challenge when I try to draw people. Well this month I do want to focus on people. Actually it isn't as bad as I first thought, but it is still... well... not great :)

Second piggie design for my "Pigs Fly" theme. Love this one. In revision I'll touch up his back leg.

Start of some design ideas for a "Pigs Fly" theme. I think this sketch shows the confidence I've gained through the previous two challenges.
