Day 19

A goose from behind. I didn't finish this one as my head cold was getting the better of me today.

Day 17

A retry from Day 13... A few improvements, but still a really hard pose.

Also something completely new to the sketchbook. Some horses thanks to some stock photos from Chunga Stock

Day 16

I feel that these are a little better than yesterday. I wasn't as ridged about the construction and tried to let it flow more for the first two. However I am not sure they both look like women. lol

For the second page, I used horizontal dividing lines to give me eight regions, like an example in "The Fundamentals of Figure Drawing", then used the lines to attempt to guide the figure. I am having trouble with arms and where the breasts should go. My legs are looking a little better since I started highlighting the knee-cap.

I've used some more of the great stock poses from Senshi Stock

Day 14

Two weeks! Tone needs work, gesture needs work... Oh right. This is where my early success gives way to frustration. Or perhaps its just because I've caught a cold. I'm not giving up yet.

Day 13

Spectacular failures! Back to basics for me...

Day 12

That hand is mine... the lovely ladies are from photos. I started playing around about 2 hours ago, but a chunk of that time was spent searching for some tasteful images and starting a "resource" folder on my computer.

Day 11

Some more chicken studies from photos using a 2B graphite pencil. I'm not very happy with any of the eyes, but the major features look ok.

Day TEN

Today I tried to draw from life... things that move are very hard to draw. I tried to do some quick outlines to capture position and perspective. Then with the last three found some images from Deviant Art and tried to draw the basics as quickly as possible, giving myself around 2 minutes... 5 for the rooster in the corner.

Day Nine

My hand again. I'm feeling more comfortable to just draw and ignoring the eraser. Attempted again to block out the basic shapes before any details are filled in. A hand looks strange when it is made up of trapezoids.

Day Eight

Quick sketch tonight of my left hand in pencil. A bit awkward. I attempted to map it out lightly with rectangles first, then fill out the details.

Day Seven

Not as happy as yesterday. The shading was really difficult and intricate. To me, I think the perspectives are a little off as well.

This is a peach blossom with buds and new leaves, from photograph done in charcoal.

Day Six

This is from a photo, not from life, however I was uninspired by the things on my desk. I attempted some blending with a tortillion. I think my blending has slightly improved over the last week, but it is still early days yet. I still have a lot to learn about light and shadow and how to achieve a larger tonal range with my charcoal pencil.

I am satisfied with the eye and bottom of the beak and wattle, but not very happy with the comb. I started with a rough outline, then filled out the features a little more, completed the feathers, then did the details of the eye and shading. The comb was last and I am least happy with that.

This took me around 25-30 minutes. I'm really happy with my efforts tonight.

Day Five

Another look around the room for something quick to sketch. My straight lines need work.

Day Four

Needing something to draw... I am still persevering with a soft charcoal pencil which means no erasing. I think this turned out ok with a few areas to improve upon, but I was expecting a lot worse.

Day Three

This is another thing I promise myself I will do at least once a day. We'll see how long it lasts.

Weekend time will be time for drawing outside or finding an online lesson. Here I am starting to re-learn perspective.

Today I learnt I am not ready for chalk pastels and I shall stick with charcoal for now.

Day Two

I admit that I have no idea what I'm doing and I am playing with a charcoal pencil.

The best and worst thing I have discovered is that charcoal is a harsh mistress. She cannot be erased forcing you to live with your mistakes so you can analyse them later instead of removing them forever.

Day One

I have been inspired.
If one man can begin with nothing and paint fine art within 5 years then why can't I?
The reason is because I have never tried.
I have never practiced every day.
I have never thought I could.

Everyone can be an artist.

Here is one man's journey from absolute novice to accomplished artist.

And if one man can do it, then why can't I.
